The first misfortune was that old Miss Cooney fell off her bicycle and had to be taken to the hospital. Her neighbors at Ten Cottages tried to keep an eye on her deserted house, but they were put to flight by wasps which had built their nest in one of the ruinous rooms. It was a boy, Tom Connor, who first discovered Kate, Miss Cooney's orphan niece, whom the old lady had kept hidden away. And it was Kate who had found the bangle. She wouldn't say where it came from, but Tom had his suspicions and they increased as more and more trouble came upon the people of Ten Cottages. None of them would have dared even to climb Sleepers' Hill, let alone take anything from the prehistoric graves beneath. But Kate was a stranger...
